THE BEGINNINGS |
| The first Pime's missionaries sent to
Bengala, Fr. Albino Parietti, Fr. Luigi Limana, Fr. Antonio Marietti and
Br. Giovanni Sesana, arrived at Calcutta on the beginning of June 1855 and
on June 17 they reached Berhampur, their Mission field.
They started a monastic life: study and prayer, prayer and study, they learnt Hindy and Bengali. They lived in an extreme poverty. When they were able to speak well enough, the three Fathers moved to three different places. The superior Parietti to Berhampur, Limana to Krishnagar with Br. Sesana and Marietti to Jessore.

Berhampur, July 26 1855 We are studying day and night and with real zeal because not knowing the language we are but like statues... 4 hours class and 5 of study, and together with that other different tasks. On top of that the tropical heat: 44 degree. ( P.Parietti). Berhampur, March 19 1857 Our catholics are so scattered and they need so much the missionary's help that each one of us had to move to a different province and that with the blessing of our be loved Bishop of Calcutta, who approved so much our plan. ( P.Parietti).

| On the spring of 1857 the "sepoy's revolt"! The British civilians had to run away. The missionaries stayed trusting to be "protected by the Divine Providence", as Parietti wrote. Infact they did not have any trouble by the rebels. |
