We strive
to accomplish the following:
In Our own
Community
with the children
and adults of Waianae, HOA'AINA O MAKAHA is a
non-profit organization based in
Makaha Valley on the Waianae Coast of Oahu in Hawai'i. We are
spiritually-based community rooted in our relationship to the land and
dedicated to establishing peace through education, equitable economic
development and social justice. We are governed by a Board of Directors that believe these
principals. The mission of Hoa 'Aina is to educate ourselves in the ways
of building peace. are learning to
take care of the land in the Hawaiian tradition of malama aina
(caring for the land). We stand with the kanaka maoli (indigenous
Hawaiian) as they defend their rights for the land, a house, a job. In the
spirit of mutual respect, we celebrate our differences while pledging
ourselves to end discrimination and build a future based on our shared
freedom and independence.
In the
World
we continue to
exchange experiences with people from different parts of the world who
come to share in our life, and whit everybody who desires to join in
creating the reality of peace by taking the responsibility to work for
justice.
In Our
Lives
we seek to know our place
in the world and the role we are called to play. We continuously examine
our values as demonstrated in the way we live, what we hold important, and
how we deal with each other.
We
recognize
that our goals can
only be achieved if our actions are carried out in concert with the world
community of peace builders.
International Members need only to be in harmony with the goals of
Hoa'Aina O Makaha and to seek to live them out in their own community.
Through
newsletters
correspondence, this Web
Site and possible exchanges, we will keep in touch, share experiences,
reflections and ideas. By sharing our struggles for a just world, we will
be united in one spirit. As Mahatma Gandhi said: " a small group of
courageous people filled with steadfast faith in their mission can change
the course of history...."
