POEMS

SIGNS (AND SONNETS) OF THE TIMES

"Poetry is an act of peace."

That's what Pablo Neruda believed. Robert Frost thought that "Poetry is a way of taking life by the throat."

Poets Anonymous wants people to experience poetry, perhaps, especially, those who rarely think about it. So in January of 1999 they bought space on more than sixty billboards in Los Angeles and put up excerpts from a number of poets.

The words had an impact. One driver wrote to the Los Angeles Times to comment about coming "face to face with the Charles Bukowski billbord. At a time in my life when everything seems a trial, its message - 'What matters most is how well you walk through the fire' - startled me. It seemed to have been put there to speak specifically to me."

If  you have not picked up a book of poetry for a while, try it. Let the words speak as you sit quietly and listen to what they have to say.

Our ancestors... composed musical tunes, or put verses in writing. (Sirach 44: 1,5)

Language is a great and under appreciated gift Open my eyes and ears to the magnificent possibilities, Holy God.
